THE NEW HARVEST FROM THE MAGANÀ FAMILY IS FINALLY HERE!

This is an incredibly smooth and full-bodied natural micro lot from the Magaña family and the variety SL28.; it originally comes from Kenya and was planted on their gfarm San Andres 5 years ago.

The trees are now producing their first big harvest. The coffee was hand-picked over two days, the first time in March and the second in April. The coffee was then left to dry in its own husks in the open sun for three days, before being moved into the shade for a three-week slow drying process. This method produces a coffee with a soft fruitiness and chocolate sweetness. There are also subtle notes of dried tropical fruit.

The Magaña family have their farms in the Apaneca region and take of them with great care and sensitivity. We have known Angel and his family for more than 15 years and buy their entire harvest. The family has a great commitment to both the environment and quality, always striving to be a little better every year. The philosophy is about growing and producing coffee in harmony with nature, a deep care for the balance of the soil and the ecosystem. Their farm is home to a variety of birds and other animals.

MER OM VARIETEN SL 28

SL28 is among the most well-known and well-regarded varieties of Africa. It has consequently spread from Kenya, where it was originally selected in the 1930s, to other parts of Africa (it is important in Arabica-growing regions of Uganda, in particular) and now to Latin America.

The variety is especially suited for medium to high altitudes and usually develops exceptional quality if the terroir meeets the demands of the variety. SL28 shows resistance to drought, but is susceptible to the major diseases of coffee. SL28 is notable for its rusticity—a quality meaning that it can be left untended for years or even decades at a time, and then return to successful production.

Recent genetic tests have confirmed that SL28 is related to the Bourbon genetic group. It can be really old, there are SL28 trees in many parts of Kenya that are 60-80 years old and still productive.
