Peru Nueva Florida
Whole Beans
The new harvest from our Peruvian friends in Nueva Florida is finally here! This is the fifth year that we can offer organic coffee from the Ccoillar family, who 25 years ago switched from growing potatoes to coffee cultivation, tired of drought, poor harvests and bank loans that could never be repaid. The eldest son, Florentino, decided to leave the farm where he grew up in the Andes and eventually found a piece of highland jungle for sale in the Rio Negro district. He planted his first coffee trees and named the emerging farm Nueva Florida. Gradually, the rest of the family moved there too.
Almost 20 years later, they are farming together, and through their joint efforts, they have succeeded in producing a truly fine organic coffee. We at Gringo are delighted to be able to purchase their harvest and are extremely pleased with our long-standing relationship with these hard-working producers. In 2024, they also visited us at the roastery, and we had two amazing days with Saturnina and Florentino.

BACKGROUND
The Ramos Ccoillar family members, the founders of the Nueva Florida community, originally come from theHuancavelica region in the Andes of Peru. Back in the days, the family used farm potatoes. But droughts, poor harvests in the region, and high debts with the agricultural bank resulted in serious financial stress.
The oldest son Florentino decided to leave the region and look for opportunities somewhere else in Peru. He found a piece of highland jungle that was for sale and called it La Nueva Florida – ‘The new blossoming’. There he planted his first coffee plants. Thanks to his experience as a day labourer on other farms, he had a clear vision of how he wanted to build up his own plantation.
This happened just over twenty years ago, and over time more and more family members have followed suit and settled in the area. One of them is his younger brother Amadeo, who came with his girlfriend Elisa. The farms are still surrounded by a beautiful, mountainous and lush landscape, rich in shady trees and fruit trees. Today, La Nueva Florida has developed into a small community, where all the inhabitants originate from Huancavelica.
