Despite its modern farming methods, Gundikhan Estate has deep historical roots. The estate is owned by Saif Ulla, a passionate nature and animal lover who values harmony between people and the natural world. His philosophy centres on promoting biodiversity and preserving the rich flora and fauna of the area, which borders the renowned Bhadra Tiger Reserve.

This small microlot of just 160 kilos is a combination of two naturally dried coffees: the traditional Kent variety and the experimental SLN5B. The result is a full-bodied espresso with gentle, fruity acidity and notes of rum raisin, dark berries, cocoa and clove.

BACKGROUND

Nestled in the Baba Budangiri Hills of Karnataka, Gundikhan Estate borders the spectacular Bhadra Tiger Reserve, one of India’s most biodiverse natural habitats. The estate is managed by Saif Ulla, a passionate coffee producer with a deep commitment to biodiversity, sustainability and exceptional coffee quality.

After studying in the UK and working in Leeds, Saif returned to his family’s estate in 2015, determined to bring new life to the farm. He began by rejuvenating the coffee plantations, introducing new varieties and developing more precise cultivation and processing methods. Particular attention was given to Chandragiri, an Arabica variety developed by India’s Coffee Board from a cross involving Villa Sarchi and Timor Hybrid.

For Saif, producing outstanding coffee goes hand in hand with protecting the surrounding environment. The estate’s mineral-rich soils, favourable microclimate and proximity to the tiger reserve create excellent growing conditions. Alongside the coffee, eleven different tropical fruits and spices are cultivated, contributing to a rich and diverse ecosystem.

Careful cherry selection, controlled fermentation and slow drying on raised beds allow the natural character of the coffee to shine through. The result is a beautifully clean and balanced natural-processed coffee.

Gundikhan Estate is a wonderful example of how thoughtful farming, modern processing and respect for nature can come together to produce truly exceptional coffee.
